Brain Booster Supplements

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

One of the biggest complaints I hear from my clients are brain related! Whether it's memory, concentration or focus, these supplements can help boost brain functions.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is one of the best multifunctional supplements and in my opinion a staple that everyone should have. Most of our westernised diets are high in omega 6 and 9, but low in omega 3 as we don’t eat enough fish so supplementation is a must for most of us. There are two main fatty acids found in fish oil eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is important all throughout life, from conception; to help with the brain development of the foetus until old age when cognitive abilities start to decline, which is why omega 3’s are something we should be wary of when planning our diets. We should make sure we are getting enough to maintain healthy cognitive functions as it can also help lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and dementia.

Lions Mane

Lions mane is a type of mushroom traditionally used in chinese medicine which has been shown to improve cognitive health. It is part of a group of nootropic substances which can enhance cognitive functions and may be able to improve memory, concentration and focus. Some of the beneficial properties of lion’s mane include anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective which all play a role in protecting the brain and how it works. Through several actions lion’s mane may be able to reduce the risk of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia or even prevent the worsening of these conditions. Lions mane has also been associated to help with depression and anxiety due to its affect on the nervous system.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba has the ability to improve blood flow and circulation in arteries and vessels, in particular circulation in the brain which can therefore have an impact on cognitive functions such as focus and memory. This herb also contains flavonoids and terpenoids which increase antioxidant activity. There are studies which indicate that gingko can improve short- and long-term memory in people who have memory impairments. There is also evidence which shows that it can impact the activity of different brain waves which can therefore have an impact on memory and concentration.

Ginseng

Ginseng is one of the most infamous adaptogenic herbs, which regulate and stabilise the body’s processes and promotes homeostasis. Due to its classification as an adaptogen; It has a regulatory balancing effect on the central nervous system which impacts various functions in the body. Ginseng has an impact on mental activity by stimulating certain parts of the brain which can aid the restoration of memory and function.
