Emperor of Immunity: Reishi

Updated: Mar 11, 2020

This is now one of the most talked about subjects in the supplement and natural health industry and wanted to share with you what I know and my thoughts. Reishi is a staple in my supplement routine and is one of the best to use for immunity. It’s something I take all year round for my immune system, allergies and a great many other things.

Reishi is a mushroom that has been used in Chinese medicine and Asia where they originated from for over 2000 years but has recently become a trending supplement in the western world. There are different types of reishi but red reishi has been shown to have the edge over the other types particularly by enhancing the function of the immune system and is recognised to have superior benefits as it is associated with longevity.

Reishi is also a great antioxidant, that works by eliminating hydroxyl free radicals which cause damage to our bodies. Therefore, strengthens the body and prevents many conditions such as autoimmune disease, heart disease, and allergies amongst many others.

Reishi contains polysaccharides, triterpenoids, proteins and amino acids. The polysaccharides are one of the most active components of the mushroom, they contain a type of polysaccharide called Beta-glucans which are known to strengthen the immune response of the body’s immune system.

Reishi has been shown to be an Immune modulator; regulates the immune system and when it is taken regularly, it can restore the body to its natural state, enabling all organs to function normally.

There is some evidence to show that reishi can balance hormone levels which would mean that it maybe a useful supplement for those suffering from autoimmune disease.

Key active constituents:

Beta-glucans

Ling Zhi-8 protein

Ganodermic acids (triterpenes)

When and how to take Reishi?

Reishi is best taken in the morning on an empty stomach with plenty of water. The water will enhance the effects of Reishi which aids detoxification and flushes out toxins from the liver as well as improving liver function. It is always best to follow directions of the specific supplement brand you are using.

It is also recommended to take Vitamin C with Reishi as this will assist the body in absorbing the active ingredients in Reishi. Studies have shown that Vitamin C helps break down complex polysaccharides into smaller pieces that the body can digest.

Allergies

Reishi works as an adaptogen; particularly focusing on the regulation of the immune system, addressing imbalances through immunomodulation. One of reishi’s main abilities is to help tackle allergies through balancing the reaction of the immune system to allergens (Allergies occur when there is an overreaction to allergens). Reishi works by reducing the inflammation and acts as a natural anti-histamine.

Asthma and Respiratory health

Triterpenes in reishi mushrooms are linked to the reduction of histamine reactions associated with allergies and asthma. They can downregulate allergic reactions and inhibit the release of histamine involved in triggering an asthma attack, by causing bronchoconstriction and production of mucus. Reishi can also benefit asthma sufferers as it supports the regeneration of the bronchial epithelium.

Infections and Viruses

Reishi mushrooms are considered a natural antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. The triterpenes are the compounds which help protect the body against microbial, viral and fungal infections. They can also improve blood circulation and lower inflammation, which in turn can help resolve infections quicker, reduce pain and fight fatigue.

Cardiovascular health

Reishi has cardiotonic action. The triterpenes in reishi have the ability to lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and improve blood circulation. This may be due to how reishi can reduce inflammation in blood vessels and arteries
